Linocut – reduction cut
| Linocut printmaking is one of the best known relief
printing methods. The process of
preparing the block is relatively simple by using cutting tools to cut a lino
block, and strikingly original prints can be created.
The aim of this workshop is to create and print a
multi-coloured design using the ‘reduction cut’ method. The process is that you cut away and print
successive layers working from light to dark.
It would be useful if you could bring your images/sketchbook ideas to
use as a basis for your design, working on a maximum of 3 colours. Obviously, the more layers you do, the more
complex it becomes and some really nice prints are created with just one
colour, plus black. You will print
about 5-10 copies of your block, so that the extras can be used to check that
you’ve got the cutting and colour right.
If you can only make one day, it would still be
possible for you to create a single coloured print and perhaps explore using
chine collé, which provides a different background colour behind the image
different to that of the rest of the paper.

Cost: $20 for one day or $40 for both
days
Materials
fee: $15 for both days or $10 for one day, which
includes the lino, papers and ink necessary to produce your prints. Please also bring a pencil and a biro or a
fine indelible ink pen (so that your drawn image remains on the block as a
permanent guide for cutting).
Lino-cutting
tool: if you
don’t already have one, it would be best if you could purchase your own cutting
tool. There are a couple of spares that
can be borrowed from the Arts & Craft Centre, but I can’t guarantee that
they will be available. You can buy a
complete set (cutting handle and blades) from Gordon Harris for $15, or they
sell handles ($4.90) and blades (individually sold behind the counter), which
works out cheaper.
Workshop suitable for all levels of
ability. Wear old clothing or an apron.
